California Statewide Law Enforcement Association
Endorses Historic New Indian Gaming Agreements

SACRAMENTO –The Coalition to Protect California's Budget & Economy today announced that the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA) has formally endorsed the four historic state-tribal Indian gaming agreements negotiated by the Governor and ratified by the Legislature with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians; the Morongo Band of Mission Indians; the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians; and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. CSLEA also opposes referendum efforts to cancel the agreements.

CSLEA represents more than 7,000 state public safety officials in California within its 19 affiliate groups, which includes agents and supervisors with the Bureau of Gambling Control. Click here to learn more about CSLEA.

The new compact agreements require the tribes to pay a much higher percentage of their net gaming revenues – up to 25% – to the state. In all, the payments would provide our state General Fund more than $200 million in the first year (with revenues increasing significantly in future years), and more than $9 billion total over the next two decades – for public safety, schools and other vital services.

The agreements also require increased levels of cooperation between tribes and neighboring local governments, including requiring tribes to coordinate with local police and fire agencies and compensate local governments for any services that are needed.

CSLEA is the second major public safety group to endorse the compacts in the past week, joining the California Fire Chiefs Association in supporting the compacts and opposing the referendum efforts.
